About the role:
ML developers today face significant friction in taking trained models into deployment. They work in a highly fragmented space, with incomplete and patchwork solutions that require significant performance tuning and non-generalizable/ model-specific enhancements. At Modular, we are building the next generation AI platform that will radically improve the way developers build and deploy AI models.
A core part of this offering is providing a platform that allows customers to achieve state-of-the-art performance across model families and frameworks. As the manager of the runtime and performance team, you will lead a team of engineers specializing in analyzing the performance characteristics of the different AI models on CPUs, GPUs and other accelerators, and implement runtime optimization to improve device and memory utilization and efficiency.

What you will do:
As a manager at Modular you are expected to be deeply involved in the technical details, design, goal setting, and execution to satisfy Modular product and customers requirements.
You will nurture collaboration with the compiler, kernels, framework, serving and product teams to achieve state of the art performance.
Additionally, you will lead and collaborate across the company to understand customer model performance requirements, help customers to reach the performance goals and make design and architecture changes to help scale the product to multiple customers and HW vendors.
As a leader at Modular you will be involved in making architecture decisions, mentoring and growing your team and others in the company, establishing a strong expertise in your team and developing yourself and your team to be on the cutting edge of technology.
What you bring to the table:
- 5+ years of experience in people management.
- 10+ years of experience in the field of high performance computing.
- Proven experience in developing a production quality high performance software for CPUs, GPUs or other devices.
- Proven experience in system level performance analysis and runtime performance optimizations.
- A robust understanding of the principles of hardware architectures such as CPUs, GPUs or other accelerators.
The estimated base salary range for this role to be performed in the US, regardless of the state, is $234,000 - $319,000 USD.
The estimated base salary range for this role to be performed in Canada, regardless of the province, is $221,000 - $301,500 CAD.
The salary for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of permissible, non-discriminatory job-related factors, which include but are not limited to education, training, work experience, business needs, or market demands. This range may be modified in the future. The total compensation for a candidate will also include annual target bonus, equity, and benefits, with equity making up a significant portion of your total compensation.
