Program Manager, Strategy & Operations

About the Team

OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. The Strategy & Operations team is responsible for driving cross-company collaboration to proactively prepare for critical moments, such as international elections or civil unrest, and respond in real-time to emerging challenges. Guiding OpenAI's work through complex issues, the team works to ensure safe and beneficial development of AI tools.

About the Role

This role will work closely with all members of the Strategy & Operations team. We are seeking a strong candidate with a proven ability to work with technical teams and also manage internal alignment for critical events, including major product launches, SEVs, and external events that could impact our users and products.

You will:

• Help mature our process and menu of services for product launches in close coordination with key partner teams like product, policy, investigations and integrity teams.
• Drive processes across various teams to ensure a unified, efficient response during critical periods.
• Identify and evaluate emerging risks, prioritize escalations, and support sensitive investigations - including supporting red-teaming around critical events and assessment and implementation of product mitigations
• Driving post mortem and after action items and learnings post escalations or critical moments for on-going learning and feedback loops
• Be well versed on OpenAI’s Usage policies to inform key work during critical periods.
• Use various internal tools for escalation management and ensure tooling gaps are surfaced appropriately.  
• Actively collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure effective prioritization and response to fast-moving issues. 
• Help expand and mature our rapid response tool-kit with hands on investment and testing of new tools for adoption within team
• Availability to support team-oncall and on-call work on weekends (when assigned) 
• Lead special projects for the Strategy team, spanning various scopes and topics, requiring strong skills in planning, coordination across cross-functional teams and familiarity with working with product teams. 

We're looking for a blend of:

• 6+ years proven experience working with Product/ technical teams, Program Management, Crisis Management, Escalations Management, Consulting or a similar role 
• Demonstrated ability to work on and understand technically complex projects and program manage workflows.
• Experience working in product and product teams, with a focus on integrity, operations and safety
• Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate challenges, recommendations and trade-offs under pressure.
• Outstanding organizational and written communication skills, including drafting executive level briefs or reports. 
• A proven track record of effectively prioritizing and managing workloads, demonstrating a strong commitment to delivering high-quality results
• (Stretch) Can collaborate with product and safety teams to create systems/tools (via code and/or no-code / AI) to facilitate internal processes and rapid response to critical events
