VP of Software Engineering

Bearing is an early-stage startup pioneering the integration of AI within the maritime shipping industry. Maritime shipping is a trillion-dollar industry that moves 90% of the goods we interact with on a daily basis.  However, it has historically lagged far behind other industries in adopting new technologies.  At Bearing, we’re changing that.  We have developed AI-enabled products that address the shipping industry’s biggest pain points, and we count some of the world's largest shippers as our customers.
 
We are seeking an exceptionally skilled senior engineering leader to join our team. This individual will collaborate closely with our Chief Executive Officer, contributing to the management of our expanding team of software engineers and data scientists. Your role will involve providing guidance and fostering the growth of a team of first-line technical managers. Additionally, you will play a pivotal role in maximizing our engineers' productivity and shaping engineering strategies and processes.
 
As a visible leader in an early-stage startup, this role demands versatility and a knack for thriving in a dynamic environment.  
 
This is an in-person position located at Bearing’s offices in Medellin. Relocation to Medellin will be available for the right candidate (must be legally able to work in Colombia).
What you’ll be doing:
  • Help guide the technical planning processes: Working with the Chief Executive Officer, you will help define and enforce engineering planning, review, and approval processes. You will also support coordination of ongoing planning efforts with the Product, Business Development and Operations functions in the company. 
  • Provide direct management and mentorship of technical leaders and individually contributing engineers: You will be responsible for helping leaders and individuals set and achieve their professional goals. This will include working with them on career development roadmaps and providing ongoing feedback and guidance on those roadmaps.  
  • Coordinate engineering efforts: You will help ensure the engineering team is effectively collaborating and prioritizing the most important engineering tasks and is in coordination with other functional team activities.
  • Execute the product roadmap:  You will guide the engineering team to collaborate closely with Product Management and R&D on the development efforts to execute the product roadmap, strategic projects, and other technical initiatives.  
  • Quality and customer focus:  You will ensure the engineering team places a high value on product quality and individual customer success with comprehensive product testing, continuous improvement initiatives and a robust release process.
  • Help lead sprint planning and manage sprint progress: You will help engineers with ticket creation and help ensure engineers meet their goals for each sprint.  
  • Hiring and recruiting: You will be responsible for helping to hire and onboard new engineers.  
  • What you must bring:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • 10+ years of experience working as a Software Engineer
  • 8+ years managing a team of Software Engineers
  • 6+ years of experience running agile software development processes
  • Strong familiarity with project management tools (e.g., Jira)
  • Executive presence skills for collaborating in a global technology company
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask and prioritize work
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Previous experience working at an early-stage startup
