Remote Hybrid: Persons in these roles are expected to spend part of their time on-site in our Seattle offices and may occasionally work remotely from their home in the Greater Seattle area. Legal Counsel (Privacy and Contracts)

Who You Are:

You are an agile thinker who is energized by creative problem solving and building things. You are able to build and manage a privacy program that is tailored to a group’s business needs and maximizes business results. You have an interest in cross-border legal issues such as FCPA, Export Control, and remote employees. You also really like reviewing and negotiating a broad range of contracts: NDAs to strategic partnership agreements.

Who We Are: 

We are an existing legal department of three lawyers and one contract and procurement manager. We are collegial and collaborative. We like to make up fun project names for our strategic initiatives. We work primarily remotely but meet often via video chat. We all work with a large amount of autonomy. As a team, we are slightly more pro-dog than pro-cat. We are passionate about AI2’s mission.

Your Next Challenge:

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

PRIVACY:

  • Advise on privacy issues regarding business products, services and processes to ensure they are executed in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements (e.g. data security, identity theft, opt-out requests)
  • Track legislation and update stakeholders
  • Lead development, implementation and management of privacy program and related policies
  • Oversee specific privacy policy and compliance areas for the collection, storage, use, distribution and disposal of customer and employee data
  • Oversee investigations of alleged privacy breaches

CONTRACTS: 

  • Draft and negotiate a wide range of legal agreements with both governmental and non-governmental organizations
  • Provide support across AI2’s activities ensuring that legal issues, contracts, disputes, and complex transactions are conducted within the due diligence of the legal framework

INTERNATIONAL:

  • Contribute to the legal team’s research and understanding of regulatory and compliance issues involved in dealings or engagements with international parties

What You’ll Need:

Required

  • 7+ years of legal experience in a corporate environment
  • Self-starter: Does not need daily directions or validation to make decisions
  • Skilled in working with ambiguity
  • Start-up mentality; adaptable, can pivot quickly
  • Comfortable taking risks 
  • Ability to adjust rapidly to new strategies and approaches for building support in a fast-moving environment
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills: polished, concise, catered messages to different audiences
  • Ability to build strong relationships with leaders at all levels to obtain successful outcomes and move the business forward
  • Google Suite product experience
  • Ability to work on complex issues where problems are not clearly defined and where fundamental principles do not fully apply

Preferred

  • Experience in and/or interest to learn international and cross-border issues such as:
    • Export Control
    • FCPA
    • International employee mobility
  • Experience and/or interest in project management to establish or improve processes and streamline legal team efforts with existing workflows in the company

Education/Certifications

  • Minimum Degree required: JD
  • Licensed to practice law in Washington State
  • Preferred certifications: CIPM and CIPP/E
