Applied Scientist (Boston Dynamics AI Institute LLC) – Provide complex research and development for our Robotics research team. Research and develop The AI Institute’s cutting-
edge robotics technologies and robots used in the areas of cognitive AI, athletic AI, organic hardware design, and robot ethics. Advance The AI Institute’s goal to develop machines that contribute to human safety, care for the disabled and elderly, and enhance industrial productivity.
Duties Include:

1. Research, design, and implement complex estimation and control algorithms for low
latency, highly dynamic robots;
2. Evaluate and design sensor suite to achieve the desired robot maneuvers with reliability
in collaboration with the robotics hardware team;
3. Collaborate with the electrical and software teams to achieve the necessary parallel and
distributed computing performance;
4. Bring new hardware, algorithms, and ideas to The AI Institute in collaboration with
research institutions around the world;
5. Leverage solid mathematics and physics background to understand, adapt, and implement
research literature in the fields of computer vision, estimation, and controls;
6. Leverage machine learning experience to design algorithms that use data-driven
approaches wrapped with sufficient mathematical safety structure;
7. Promote quality and reliability through regular robotics code reviews.

Minimum Requirements:

A Master’s degree or foreign equivalent in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a
related field plus 4 years of post-baccalaureate experience in a robotics engineering-related
occupation.

Experience must include the following, which may have been gained concurrently:

1) 4 years of experience utilizing C++, Python, and CUDA applications in a production environment;
2) 4 years of experience utilizing Robotic Operating System (ROS) and related distributed computing architecture;
3) 4 years of experience working with vision (cameras and lidars) and inertial sensors (IMU, GPS, and RTK);
4) 4 years of experience designing calibration techniques and algorithms for vision and inertial sensors;
5) 4 years of experience with localization and sensor fusion algorithms, including Kalman filters, factor graphs, and Bayesian inference techniques;
6) 4 years of experience with time synchronization between sensors and distributed computing network;
7) 2 years of experience utilizing machine learning with deep neural networks for object and terrain detection, and monocular depth estimation;
8) 2 years of experience adapting and implementing Structure From Motion (SFM)
algorithms;
9) 2 years of experience utilizing convex and non-convex optimization algorithms.
