Junior Systems Engineer

Mission:

Our mission is to solve the most important and fundamental challenges in AI and Robotics to enable future generations of intelligent machines that will help us all live better lives.

This role will be based in the External Engagement Programs (EEP) Team, whose primary goal is supporting our new Outreach Center in Kendall Square, Cambridge. The goal of the EEP Team is translating research concepts into demos accessible to a broader audience beyond academia and tech. The mission of the Outreach Center is to show the public the current state-of-the-art Robotics and encourage them to engage with Robotics via hands-on exhibits. Engineers on the EEP Team will take internal demos from the AI Institute and redesign and build them into fun, dynamic, and educational demos that will be used in our Outreach Center. Exhibits will rotate, resulting in a consistent stream of innovative projects for the Team to tackle. Some demos may also be used at conferences and expositions about robotics and engineering. The ability to travel (2-3 weeks per year) to support these demos is helpful. 

The External Engagement Programs (EEP) Team is seeking diverse, thoughtful, and motivated team members who have experience creating and completing projects. Focus on user experience and/or audience-based-design is helpful. Please include a portfolio with your application if possible. 

We are onsite in our new Cambridge, MA office where we are building a collaborative and exciting new organization.
Responsibilities:
  • Completing tasks related to creation of new or updated demos
  • Acquire new project-specific skills as required in order to complete tasks
  • Owning subsystems within demos and projects appropriate with experience level
  • Interfacing with technical and non-technical members of teams internal and external to the organization in a cross-functional capacity
  • Providing accurate time and labor estimation for tasks and updates as necessary
  • Creating documentation for technical procedures and processes

  • A Successful Candidate Will Possess The Following:
  • Knowledge of technical systems, equipment, and tools
  • Expertise in robotics or complex electro-mechanical and networked engineering, including knowledge of robotic systems, components, and software
  • Ability to quickly acquire functional expertise in new or unfamiliar technologies
  • Hands-on experience with debugging complex electromechanical hardware, wireless communications, networking, or product/system reliability
  • Experience with delivering minimum viable customer-facing products (MVPs)Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Excellent skills communicating with non-technical audiences
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Be excited to create work that represents the AI Institute as a dynamic, forward-thinking research institution
  • Additional Desirable Skills:
  • Experience/interest in education and technology
  • Undergraduate degree or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience
