Policy Lead
The Center for AI Safety Action Fund (CAIS AF) is a nonpartisan advocacy organization dedicated to advancing public policies that maintain U.S. leadership in AI and protect against AI-related national security threats. Alongside our sister organization, the Center for AI Safety (CAIS), we tackle the toughest AI issues with a mix of technical, societal and policy solutions. CAIS is a leading research and field-building organization on a mission to reduce societal-scale risks from AI.
The Policy Lead at CAIS AF is a pivotal role that involves steering and managing the organization's Federal policy work. This position requires a strategic mindset and the ability to navigate complex policy landscapes. For 2024-2025, this may include working to maintain U.S. leadership in AI chip manufacturing, compute governance, preventing malicious use of AI, and securing funding for key government agencies.
In this role you will:
Help develop the strategy to achieve CAIS AF's policy priorities and goals in partnership with the Director of Government Relations and Public Policy.Monitor and analyze legislation, administrative or regulatory activity, or other government-led initiatives at all levels that could be of potential impact to CAIS AF.Draft policy analysis documents for policymakers. Prioritize and respond to government RFI's, public or inbound requests from policymakers and others. Liaise with CAIS to ensure alignment on advocacy, policy priorities, and related activities between the organizations. Demonstrate up-to-date knowledge of global and USG regulatory environments.Prepare members of CAIS AF staff to meet with Congress, employees of federal agencies, and so forth to give technical advice on policy. This includes developing written policy materials.Organize events to bring together different stakeholders. Preferred qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in public policy, law, or STEM degree; Advanced degree preferred.Experience in a technology company, government, NGO or similar organization managing technology policy issues, including AI.5+ years of experience in policy development and implementation.Experience working closely with technical teams and the ability to understand technical issues.Strong communication and collaboration skills.Ability to balance competing priorities and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment. The salary range for this role is $160,000-180,000 and is located in Washington DC.
