Managing Editor

The Center for AI Safety (CAIS) is a leading research and advocacy organization dedicated to reducing societal-scale risks from AI. We tackle the toughest AI challenges through a combination of technical and policy solutions, working closely with our sister organization, the CAIS Action Fund.

As part of our mission, CAIS is launching a new online platform dedicated to high-quality journalism and analysis on AI’s impacts on national security, politics, and the economy. This platform will publish timely analysis of AI policy and industry developments, opinion pieces from leaders in the field, and explainers distilling key insights from cutting-edge research. Our goal is to foster a more nuanced and well-informed public conversation on AI. It aims to be accessible to a broad audience and bridge the worlds of policy, national security, and research.

We are seeking a Managing Editor to establish and drive the platform’s editorial vision, ensuring it becomes a leading source of insightful, rigorous, and accessible writing on AI and its societal impacts. The Managing Editor will play a pivotal role in shaping the publication’s strategy, building and leading a team of editors and writers, developing a network of external contributors, and designing efficient editorial processes to produce high-quality content on a regular cadence.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Develop and refine a clear editorial vision and content strategy in collaboration with the Senior Editor, ensuring the platform becomes a go-to source for informed, nuanced, and accessible analysis on AI’s societal impacts.
  • Maintain high editorial standards, overseeing content quality to ensure all published work is insightful, well-researched, and accurate.
  • Recruit, lead, and mentor a team of editors and writers while fostering a culture of editorial excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Guide and support contributors by reviewing pitches, providing editorial feedback, and refining arguments and storytelling to align with the platform’s mission.
  • Build and manage relationships with external contributors, including journalists, academics, policymakers, and industry leaders, to cultivate a diverse range of authoritative voices.
  • Develop partnerships with media outlets, research institutions, and thought leaders to expand the platform’s reach and impact.
  • Oversee editorial operations, including content workflows, the editorial calendar, and deadlines, ensuring a steady stream of timely and well-structured articles.
  • Collaborate with designers and multimedia producers to enhance articles with visuals, data-driven graphics, and interactive elements.
  • Monitor audience engagement and content performance, using insights to refine editorial strategies and optimize reach.
  • You'll thrive in this role if you:
  • Are a strategic thinker with sharp editorial instincts and want to use this skill to identify and develop compelling stories at the intersection of AI, policy, and global affairs.
  • Have a deep understanding of storytelling and can craft impactful, engaging articles while working closely with writers to refine ideas, structure arguments, and ensure clarity and precision.
  • Excel at building relationships with writers, researchers, and public figures, and can engage high-profile contributors to share their expertise while fostering collaboration across teams.
  • Have a strong track record of managing editorial teams, setting ambitious goals, and ensuring timely execution of content plans while staying highly organized and detail-oriented in a fast-paced environment.
  • Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of experience in journalism, editing, or digital media, ideally with expertise in political analysis, technology reporting, or national security.
  • A strong understanding of technology, policy, and global affairs.
  • Experience leading editorial teams and mentoring writers.
  • Exceptional editing, writing, and fact-checking skills with a keen eye for clarity, coherence, and argument structure.
  • Experience working with subject-matter experts and journalists to refine ideas and translate technical concepts for a broad audience.
  • Depending on experience and qualifications.
This is a unique opportunity to shape the conversation on one of the most critical technological and geopolitical challenges of our time. If you are an experienced editor with a passion for AI policy and public-interest journalism, we’d love to hear from you.
