Build and Release Engineer

About Modular

We believe that AI is a net positive force in the world. Our vision and mission are to help rebuild AI infrastructure to advance humanity and our environment. We will do whatever it takes to empower our customers, team, and company to benefit from that pursuit. You can read about our culture and careers here to understand how we work and what we value.

We are owners and advocates for the underlying technologies, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure. These essential building blocks form the high-quality and coherent experiences our users expect. We aim to drive the pace of innovation for every AI/ML developer.

About the role:

At Modular, we are building a next generation AI platform; a modular, layered and composable software stack, that "just works" across cloud and edge environments, and compute hardware types (CPU, GPU, AI accelerators).

We are looking for a senior software engineer to develop scalable build, package, and release infrastructure for our next-generation AI products as we expand to a broad range of OS and device targets. Come be a part of our world-leading AI infrastructure team and we will build the future together!

LOCATION: This role is based out of North America. You can work out of one of our offices in Palo Alto, CA or Seattle, WA, or remotely from home.

What you will do:

  • Develop packaging, release, and distribution strategies for Modular’s products.
  • Develop multi-language build and test infrastructure for our AI compiler, runtime, and language bindings targeting a broad range of OS and hardware targets.
  • Investigate better tools and patterns to improve developer velocity for build, test and release tasks.
  • Work on monitoring, alerting and observability for our build and test infrastructure.
  • Maintain documentation for build, testing, and release processes.

What you bring to the table:

  • 5+ years of software development and build infrastructure experience.
  • Strong experience in building and packaging C and C++ based projects, including language bindings (e.g., distributable Python wheels with nontrivial C extensions) is a must.
  • Experience packaging and releasing for edge applications (desktop, mobile, or server).
  • Experience with build tools such as Bazel, CMake, Make, and ninja for large scale software.
  • Experience with designing and implementing CI/CD automation and pipelines for builds and tests.
  • Familiar with artifact management solutions (AWS CodeArtifact, Artifactory, aptly, package mirrors), software packaging, and dependency management.
  • Deep understanding of build dependencies at various levels (header dependencies, linking dependencies, tools dependencies, package dependencies...).
  • Strongly identifies with our core company cultural values.

Helpful but not required:

  • Software development experience in C/C++.
  • Experience building machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Experience building machine learning runtimes with accelerator support (GPU, TPU, etc.).

The estimated base salary range for this role to be performed in the US, regardless of the state, is $157,500.00 - $253,000.00 USD. The salary for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of permissible, non-discriminatory job-related factors, which include but are not limited to education, training, work experience, business needs, or market demands. This range may be modified in the future. The total compensation for a candidate will also include annual target bonus, equity, and benefits, with equity making up a significant portion of your total compensation.

For candidates who fall outside of the listed requirements, we nevertheless encourage you to apply as we may have openings that are lower/higher level than the ones advertised.
