System Architect

Your New Role and Team
Sanctuary–a multi award-winning LinkedIn Top Startup company–is seeking a System Architect reporting to the Director of Software Engineering. Get ready to join a world-class multidisciplinary team of researchers & engineers. In this role, you’ll oversee system-level design, providing guidance to applications and infrastructure teams, and support activities required to build, maintain, and automate a large, technically sophisticated on-premise and cloud-based platform. 

You’ll also lead and engage in the design of the robot's cognitive architecture, data bus, and essential services, optimize existing technologies and system capabilities, and conduct technical reviews of core system components.

The best candidates for this role have extensive experience in designing and implementing complex platforms and applications, including but not limited to cloud-based environments. Ultimately, you'll be a valued resource as you partner with senior leaders and technical leads in improving engineering standard methodologies toward ensuring performance, reliability, and measurability at scale.

  • Transform product requirements into optimized technical blueprints, architectural plans, and designs
  • Analyze corporate goals and provide robust, scalable, and reliable system designs to drive agile implementation
  • Participate in cross-team meetings, scoping, and technical decision-making
  • Identify and evaluate proposed solutions' benefits, risks, mitigations, and provide data-driven recommendations
  • Recommend new technologies to ensure quality and productivity
  • Balance top-down declaration and bottom-up collaboration
  • Bring hands-on experience developing, maintaining, and upgrading software applications
  • Act as the technical liaison between research, product, engineering, deployment, security, and system-level testing teams
  • Lead design reviews and recommend systems improvements
  • Guide engineers during system-level and component testing to ensure fidelity against architectural design and acceptance criteria
  • Tap into your leadership skills as you document, communicate, and enforce engineering best-practices and operating procedures

  • Your Qualifications & Skills
    Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in the large-scale systems, automation, and machine-learning industry
  • 5+ years of experience in project feasibility, definition requirements, design, and project leadership
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the conceptual design principles, network architecture, and the complex inter-relationships between hardware components deployed on-premises and software components deployed on edge and cloud platforms
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing an architecture for a complex global product
  • Thorough experience in building cloud-based solutions in AWS/GCP/Azure
  • Solid knowledge of network communication protocols such as IP, TCP, UDP, HTTP, MQTT, DDS, etc.
  • Deep experience in container and orchestration technology (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of distributed data streaming platforms (for example, Kafka, Amazon Kinesis, Apache Spark, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of distributed data storage (for example, MongoDB, DynamoDB, S3, etc.)
  • Experience in developing software solutions to comply with SOC 1, 2 and SOC 3
  • Experience with various coding languages ( C, C++, Python, Java, etc.)

  • In-depth knowledge of system architecture assessments, integrated design, and installation of components to ensure that relevant safety and compliance requirements are met
  • Systems engineering, integration, and root cause analysis skills for hard-to-solve system issues
  • Ability to work effectively with hardware and software departments to understand their needs, gaps, and timelines
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and process documentation skills

  • Entry-rate Annual Salary: $120,000 CAD and up

    Compensation:
    At Sanctuary, we provide above average total compensation that includes three components: salary, equity, and benefits. Our goal is to ensure fairness in pay and we strive to make the overall package highly competitive with current market rates.

    Equity:
    Equity will play a significant role in the total compensation for this role. Our goal is to provide a generous equity compensation package, exceeding what is typically offered by companies of our size. The specific amount of equity will be communicated to candidates upon receiving an offer.

    The compensation and benefits details provided for this role in Vancouver, BC are based on Sanctuary's market evaluation and may be subject to changes in the future. Your pay within the specified range will depend on various job-related factors, such as your past work experience, relevant education, and performance during interviews or work trials. Salary minimum provided is an entry-level rate for this role, as a requirement of the Pay Transparency Act in British Columbia.
