Principal Engineer - Technology Transfer - Early R&D (R2070)

Introduction to Shield AI
Shield AI’s mission is to protect service members and civilians with intelligent systems. Shield AI is a fast growing, venture-backed defense-technology company built around a team of proven executives, distinguished warfighters, and world-class AI engineers. Since 2018, Shield AI’s products and people have supported operations around the world with the US Department of Defense and our allies.

As part of the Early Stage Research and Development (ERD) team, you will help define the future architecture of our products, create technology demonstrations and produce reference implementations, and explore high-risk / high-ROI areas of technology development with a small, senior and fast-moving elite team.
What you’ll do:
  • Technology Strategy Ideation: Create the required technologies for rapid development of architectures to facilitate technology strategy articulation.
  • Iterate Rapidly with Customer Feedback: Demonstrate developed architectures as solutions to the customer and gather feedback; iterate.
  • Create Reference Implementations: Create reference implementations for potential future products or product components
  • Move Fast: Assemble a team and design and employ engineering processes that allow the team to move fast, unencumbered by challenges of a larger and evolving organization
  • Execute low TRL R&D Projects:  Take-on and execute select low-TRL R&D projects to deliver contract requirements rapidly and with high gross-profit margins
  •  Explore Future Technologies: Explore and evaluate future hardware and software technologies that are relevant to Shield AI’s product roadmap and potentially high-ROI, but beyond the scope of current Direct and IRAD projects in engineering
  • Within this role, you will drive the transfer of technology out of ERD and into the product organization.  In doing so, you will be engaged in a hands-on manner with products and projects outside of ERD and across the medium and large segments, understand the capabilities and gaps within those projects and help drive ERD’s technology development to enhance those capabilities and fill those gaps. With the understanding of these capabilities and gaps, you will contribute directly to the ERD software products as an IC software engineer to introduce new integration opportunities (e.g. making the ERD software stack compatible with AFSIM; creating tooling for translating between ERD, AFSIM and/or NGSC scenario configurations) and to uncover new possibilities (e.g. applications of the ERD AI experimentation platform to Group 5 concepts of operation).
  • Required qualifications:
  • Requires a minimum of 15 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 12 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 8 years of experience; or equivalent experience.

  • Experience with modern web stack  (Typescript, React, Node)
  • Expertise in deep experience architectural design and implementation of large and complex distributed systems
  • Experience with Git and code management tools.
  • Passionate about developing high-quality and optimized software solutions.
  • Excellent software hygiene regarding code documentation, unit testing, bug tracking.
  • Strong technical collaboration skills and a desire to develop new skills.
  • Excited by a fast-moving environment with a highly motivated group.
  • You have a demonstrated record of working hard, being a trustworthy teammate, holding yourself and others to high standards, and being kind to others
  • Professional experience with Linux environments
  • Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience with Typescript, React, Node
  • Experience with C++17 and greater
  • Experience with in aerospace and/or robotics industries
  • Hands-on experience with a major cloud platform (Azure, GCP, AWS)
  • Experience with team leadership, or as a technical project lead
  • Experience with containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes
  • #LI-OE1
