Staff Engineer, Systems Integration (R2672)

The Aircraft Software Test & Automation team is an ambitious, driven group of engineers focused on testing complex aircraft software integrated onto vehicles and various hardware systems. The team is a cross-discipline group of test engineers, software developers, integration experts, and more; working closely with our Embedded, GNC (Guidance, Navigation & Controls), and System Test teams, the Software Test & Automation team is chartered to provide (1) rigorous, but fast testing and (2) an advanced & robust test infrastructure for all aircraft software. Shield AI is building groundbreaking autonomous aircraft technologies, this team provides the complex testing & innovative capabilities required to get us there.

As a Systems Integration Engineer on Software Test & Automation, you will play a crucial role in developing and managing advanced testing solutions for autonomous VTOL aircraft. This role requires designing and implementing robust hardware integration test systems, including hardware-in-the-loop fixtures, full system integration test beds, and vehicle-in-the-loop testing capabilities. These systems are essential for both automated and manual testing scenarios that include real-time simulations, providing critical data to both software and non-software teams alike. You will marshal the architectural design, development, and deployment of our hardware integration test solutions; working closely with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to assure our test solutions fulfill complex testing requirements. Your expertise will ensure our testing platforms are not only functional but optimized for high fidelity testing necessary for rigorous validation and verification of aircraft software systems.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • Create detailed plans & designs for test systems that integrate software and hardware components to simulate aircraft operations and emulate aircraft hardware. Lead implementation of the hardware components in the testing systems
  • Work closely with software, electrical, and mechanical engineers to ensure seamless integration and operation of test systems, ensuring our test infrastructure meets the diverse needs of all stakeholders
  • Sustain and advance our test systems, identifying and solving complex issues within test systems, ensuring they operate reliably under various testing conditions
  • Maintain thorough documentation of system designs and modifications, adhering to industry standards and regulatory requirements
  • Manage timelines and resources for projects, ensuring deliverables are achieved on time and within budget
  • Support the team in developing and executing integration test plans for systems tightly coupled with hardware
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Strong proficiency in designing and implementing custom hardware solutions, including understanding of electrical systems, mechanical design, and ideally also robotics
  • Excellent proficiency in integrating & testing complex software & hardware systems, preferably for aircrafts or vehicles. Demonstrated ability to design and execute elaborate test cases
  • Experience with various testing methodologies, including HIL, vehicle integration testing, and real-time simulations for system validation
  • Deep understanding of systems integration principles, especially in aerospace, robotics, or similar complex engineering fields
  • While not primarily a software role, familiarity with software used in test environments (like simulation software or common testing frameworks) is crucial for effective collaboration
  • Experience producing high-quality technical documentation, including hardware designs, test reports, and operational procedures
  • Demonstrated track record of assuming ownership over development processes and features and delivering outstanding outcomes
  • Proven track record of successfully shipping products, showcasing the ability to navigate through development cycles, overcome obstacles, and deliver high-quality solutions to meet project deadlines and exceed expectations in a fast-paced environment
  • B.S., M.S, PhD degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) discipline, such as Aerospace, Robotics, or Computer Engineering
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with autonomous vehicles, robotic systems, or aircraft development
  • Experience with simulation software and hardware emulation
  • Background in a fast-paced, R&D or startup environment
