Union.ai is a Seattle-based startup founded by a team of former Lyft engineers.  We contribute to Flyte,  an open source platform for orchestrating massively scalable machine learning pipelines running on Kubernetes. 

These pipelines power some of the most popular apps on your phone, as well as applications in diverse industries such as song sharing, vaccine research, early cancer detection, global map rendering, financial projecting, and piloting autonomous vehicles.

The Opportunity

Reporting directly to our CEO, you will be responsible for leading our collective engineering efforts across Union.ai; including Union Cloud, DevOps Infrastructure, Flyte [OSS], Design and our Front End Engineering organization. We are looking for a technical leader who has a track record of recruiting and leading senior engineers, balancing product features with code quality, and understands how to build, ship and operationalize large distributed systems. This leader demonstrates extreme ownership and wants to incrementally deliver and evolve a highly-scalable multi-region service to our customers.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead a senior [Ex-FAANG] engineering team in writing, reviewing, maintaining, and documenting code using modern frameworks
  • Directly manage lead engineers  in control plane, execution plane, front-end, client, and operational infrastructure
  • Deliver outcomes. You will work with the team to provide roadmap guidance on product and feature launches, help make strategic decisions, and define OKRs/KPIs and prioritization
  • Establish technical excellence by creating standards to ensure consistent levels of quality, performance, reliability and scalability
  • Collaborate with Product, Design and other cross functional departments to enable your team to deliver quality products to our customers on time 
  • Inspire your team by leading with empathy and fostering their career development 
  • Partner with leadership and recruiting to attract, recruit, mentor and retain a diverse team of engineers
  • Look around corners, and focus on proactively delivering and delighting our customers

About you: 

  • 4+ years of experience leading cross functional and high performing teams as a hands on, technical manager
  • 5+ years of experience as a technical lead and or Software Engineer
  • Theoretical understanding and practical experience with distributed systems at scale
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), IaC (Terraform), Containers (Kubernetes), and CI/CD systems
  • Ability and interest in working as part of a hybrid team, crossing international time zones
  • Excellent at verbal and written communication skills
  • Prior experience at a startup, reporting into a technical founding team, is a plus
