Role
Reporting to the Head of Legal, the candidate will be the second hire in the legal department. This is a fantastic opportunity to shape the patent function in a rapidly growing AI startup, with exposure to the founders and senior leaders of the company.
This role will work closely with the engineering and product teams to protect the company’s intellectual property. This includes:
- taking invention disclosures, both in person, and remotely
- attending engineering meetings to identify potentially patentable innovation
- drafting at least twenty four (24) unique patent applications from beginning to end with minimal supervision per year
- timely responding to office actions
- maintaining our small, but growing, patent docket
- training our inventor community on patent matters
- fostering a culture of innovation within the company
For the interested candidate, and bandwidth permitting, the role can also grow into a generalist (assuming you are a member of a state bar), and assist in litigation, commercial negotiations, employment matters, general corporate matters, or fundraising activities. This is a rare opportunity to expand into as many specialties as you like.
However, the focus of the role will be patent prosecution, and you should be comfortable doing a substantial amount of prosecution work.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field
- Registered member of the patent bar in good standing
- At least three years of experience as a patent agent at a law firm or inhouse
- Personally drafted at least twenty patent applications in the AI/ML or SaaS space
