Job Description:
Shield AI is developing the world’s most advanced AI pilot for autonomous aircraft, enabling mission-critical decision-making for defense applications. Our next gen UAS represents the next generation of high-endurance, AI-driven unmanned aircraft designed for operations in contested environments.

We are seeking an Engineering Manager – Ground Support Equipment (GSE) to lead the design, development, and deployment of critical support systems that enable efficient operation, maintenance, and sustainment of our next-gen UAS. In this role, you will provide technical leadership, drive strategic initiatives, and mentor a cross-functional team to ensure the reliability, scalability, and field-readiness of Shield AI’s autonomous aircraft.

This position requires a strong background in military aviation ground support, logistics, mechanical/electrical systems, and aircraft sustainment. You will collaborate closely with engineering, manufacturing, flight operations, and sustainment teams to develop state-of-the-art ground systems that enhance aircraft readiness and mission success.
What you'll do:
  • Lead and manage a team of engineers developing Ground Support Equipment (GSE) for the next-gen UAS, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient aircraft operations.
  • Define system requirements, architecture, and integration strategies for GSE, including power systems, transport, launch & recovery, and maintenance support.
  • Oversee technical execution, ensuring designs meet operational, safety, and regulatory requirements for military and aerospace applications.
  • Develop sustainment and maintenance strategies to maximize operational availability and minimize downtime.
  • Conduct trade studies and system analysis to optimize GSE for field deployability, ruggedness, and maintainability.
  • Collaborate with DoD customers and operational stakeholders to ensure GSE meets the requirements of forward-deployed military operations.
  • Manage suppliers, subcontractors, and manufacturing partners to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of GSE systems.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives in GSE reliability, lifecycle cost, and supportability.
  • Support hiring, mentorship, and professional development within the GSE engineering team.
  • Required qualifications:
  • 10+ years of experience in ground support equipment (GSE) development, aircraft sustainment, or aerospace support systems.
  • Proven experience managing engineering teams and leading cross-functional development efforts.
  • Expertise in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems used in GSE for military or aerospace applications.
  • Strong background in aircraft maintenance, sustainment, and logistics for unmanned or manned aircraft.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, NX, or similar) for GSE design and development.
  • Knowledge of military logistics, sustainment strategies, and DoD acquisition processes.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, agile development environment with evolving mission needs.
  • Preferred qualifications:
Experience with UAS, military aviation programs, or high-endurance aircraft.
Familiarity with launch & recovery systems, power management, cooling systems, and deployable infrastructure.
Expertise in MIL-STD requirements for ground support equipment and aerospace sustainment.
  • Active Secret or Top Secret clearance (or ability to obtain one).
